It's Not Easy Being Green

The word "emerald" is a variant of the Greek word "smaragdos," which means "green stone" ... entirely appropriate for a gem that is, in effect, the green variety of beryl ore. Emeralds range from strong bluish-green to green hues, although some emeralds have a little 'yellow-green. If the color yellow ... or even blue ... loses its "Emerald" status and is simply a different variety of beryl.
